Max Hale

Spending some time at Harrow Art College I joined a London commercial art studio for two years in the early 70's. Concentrating on story illustration and fast stylised work for publication was a great discipline - useful experience for planning a painting and sketching once I switched to fine art.
Although I always painted, being with a like-minded group of artists is a super way of reinvigorating one's ideas. It also promotes progression and keeps you on your toes.
I can find almost any subject interesting enough to paint or to work in any media. I love figures and people in any space at all. I always prefer painting a face or a human form and constantly look for new ways to express my interest.
I like to experiment with different techniques and prefer to work loose - I constantly fight the tendency to tighten up.
Pastel I find gives the flexibility to work in hard or soft but my favoured media is watercolour. A wonderfully elusive and unpredictable medium and used with ink in the detail can give a completely new look to a loosely painted subject.
